Two felt cat keychains, one gray and one orange, on a white surface. Two metal keyrings nearby. Colorful felt shapes in the background.
The top is a keychain without an eye pin, the bottom is a keychain with an eye pin.

You'll need:

  • A keychain with or without the eye pin

    • If it has an eye pin, you'll also need glue

    • If it doesn't have an eye pin, you'll need thread matching your cat's color.

First, adding a keychain without an eye pin

Gray felt cat keychain project with grey thread and needle on white background, surrounded by colorful felt shapes like carrots and stars.
You'll need your cat, the keychain and your needle + thread
Hand sewing gray cat plush with pink paws, needle and thread visible. The cat is in the person's left hand with the keychain ring nearby. Colorful felt shapes scattered on table. The needle is sewing through the head, from the base of the neck.
Start by sewing through the inner neck area and exiting to the top of the head.
Hand sewing an orange felt cat face with a needle. The needle is entering from the bottom of the head. A grey felt cat keychain is in the background on a white surface. Bright felt shapes surrounding the cats.
If you haven't attached the head yet, you can start from the bottom of the head to better hide the knot.

Loop needle through the ring.

Sew back down through the head, towards the neck again.
Hand sewing a gray felt cat keychain with a needle on a white background. The cat has pink ears and black eyes. The keychain hardware is sewn onto the top middle of the cat's head with 1 stitch. The thread is exiting the bottom of the cat's head.
This is the first stitch. I recommend doing a couple to really secure it.

The second stitch. Sewing back down to the neck area.

The third stitch
Hand holding a small gray felt cat being stitched with needle and thread. The background is plain white. The needle is sewing catching some of the felt around the base of the cat's head, to anchor the knot.
And instead of going back up this time, we're going to be tying off. I'm using one of the neck stitches as an anchor.
Hands are sewing a small gray felt cat with pink details. Colored felt shapes, including a pink bow, are scattered on a white surface. The hand is pulling the needle through to the bottom left of the screen, creating a knot on the cat.

Hand holds a small gray felt cat keychain against a white background. The cat has visible stitches and a metal loop on top.
The needle is entering from the front base of the cats head to the back, to hide the end of the thread
Then, to hide the end, I'm sewing to the back of the head.

Hands are cutting gray thread at the back of the cat's head with scissors, A needle and thread are sitting in the background. White background, hints of colorful felt shapes nearby.
And cutting off the excess thread.

And that's it! It should be pretty secure now.

That's how you attach a keychain without an eye pin.

How to attach a keychain with an eye pin:

Hand holding an eye pin connected to a keychain next to two felt cats on a white surface. One grey cat, one orange cat. Colorful felt shapes like carrots surround them.
This is the eye pin. You'll attach it in a similar way to the safety eyes.
One hand is holding the orange cat while the other is pushing the eye pin into the top of the cat's head. A grey plush with a keychain lies nearby. Colorful felt shapes dot the white surface.
Stab through the top of the head. Use an awl if needed, but I was just able to go through in between my stitches.

Once we're happy with the placement, we'll use glue to secure it.
Hand holding Aleene's Tacky Glue and UHU All Purpose Adhesive tubes with colorful felt shapes of a carrot and stars on a white background.
These are the glues I've used and recommend. But any clear glue should work well.
Hands applying UHU All Purpose glue to an eye pin, with a yellow tube. Background has felt decorations and a small gray plush cat with a keychain.
Apply a fair amount of glue.
Hands inserting the eye pin into the orange cat's head on a white surface with colorful felt shapes like a carrot, flower, and bow scattered around.
Reinsert the pin back into the hole you made.
Hand holding an orange felt cat keychain with pink ears and black eyes. Another similar gray keychain is partially visible on a white surface.
Make sure it's in all the way.

Hands hold an orange plush cat, gluing around the base of the keychain. A gray plush is in the background. Glue tube shows partial yellow label text.
Just to make sure it's extra secure, I'd apply a bit of extra glue around the eye pin.

Once it's dried it should be pretty secure!
